I think a board game should be easy to understand and fast paced for parties and families consisting of different age intervals. For example, monopoly will not be suitable for let's say 8 people because it will almost take forever and after some time the players will be bored :)

Quiddler is a word construction game using the cards in your hand. Draw or discard. Challenge the others to find the longest word. Some cards have more value since two letters are joined like "cl" or "qu". You can trust dictionary-proof words or go voting for the suspected words which will bring another type of entertainment as well.

There are many classic board games like Monopoly, Taboo, Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit etc. After I discovered Balderdash Game, I just can't continue with the other board games.

The rule is simply to make up an answer (definition) which can look silly or serious whatever to a real word (which people rarely can know the definition) in categories like movies, people, laws, dates etc. You try to bluff other people with your answer mixed in real answer and other bluffs. It is an educational game as well.
